Family Values

I can still hear him now “You aren’t staying in bed all day while I work” he would say as he switched on my light at some unearthly hour!

This was my Dad, the family man, the time served tiler, the workaholic, the Mr do as I say and not as I do and all-round great guy. At home he was Dad but Monday to Friday from 8 until 5 he was “The Boss” and no one would argue that one! From there it went pretty much like this, Mum managed the showroom, Grandad worked the warehouse, Auntie Eileen sold tiles, Auntie Sue did the books (and made sure everyone got paid), Uncle Richard ran errands, little sis worked Saturdays and then there was me.

I had dreamed of becoming a vet, a guide dog trainer, even a cat walk model (for about a week) I even begged to follow my friends into the local toothpaste factory (the money was good) anything but selling tiles! In the end I decided to give it a go (for a year or 2, or so I thought)), how bad could it be? So here I was surrounded by my crazy family, caught up in every argument and disagreement, witness to the tears but also there to participate in the laughter.

I learned from an early age about family values, my dad taught me to work hard, to be honest, to be trustworthy, to be committed and dedicated but above all else to be caring and kind. I didn’t realise at the time just how much I learned from my Dad.

I apply these same values today in everything I do and although the family that once surrounded me way back when, have slowly but sadly left us, there are still a few of us left to carry on his legacy. The family I am surrounded with are now my inspiration to pursue the dreams that were once my dad’s.

I`m still here as I was some 30 years ago, only now its me at the helm and yes Dad, I know I have your genes, when I hear myself repeating your words, to my own children, as I switch on their light at some unearthly hour “You aren’t staying in bed all day while I work”

The Family is link to our past, bridge to our future x
